There’s something fun about all of the murals out and about in Los Angeles that always catch my eye.
Maybe it’s the light. Maybe it’s the colors. Maybe it’s the way creativity spills out into the streets, covering walls with murals that stop you in your tracks and make you pause for just a moment. They’re everywhere, and I love that. On this day, I snapped a quick selfie in front of one as I was on my way to enjoy a light lunch, wanting to capture one of those simple moments that make travel feel special.
Just know, if I am somewhere and the weather is nice, I have to eat outside.
Growing up in Pennsylvania, where six-to seven-month winters, rainy springs, and unpredictable falls were just part of life, outdoor dining always felt like a luxury. It wasn’t something you could count on. So now, whenever I’m out west and the sun is shining, I take full advantage. There’s something about sitting outside, feeling the warmth on your skin, and slowing down enough to enjoy a meal that feels like such a gift.
This lunch was exactly that.

Hummus topped with pomegranate seeds, beets, and nuts, fresh pita, and a crisp salad. Light, fresh, colorful, and exactly what I needed. It hit the spot and gave me one of those little sunny memories I love keeping in my phone to share later.
But beyond the food, it reminded me of something I’ve come to really value: the power of eating alone.
There’s this misconception that dining solo is something done out of necessity. I see it differently. It’s an opportunity. A chance to pause. To think. To listen to music. To catch up on a podcast. In my case, it’s often sports radio playing in my earbuds while I sit back and reset.
However you choose to spend that time, it matters.
When I’m home, I cook all of my meals, and I love that routine. It keeps me centered and connected to my healthy habits. But when I travel, I like to make each meal out feel like a little event. Not extravagant. Just intentional.
I do have a theory that if I can’t read the labels, I have no idea of the extra bad stuff, and I tend to cheat on my regular meal plan when I am out and about on the road. I won’t order anything I make at home, and it keeps things very exciting. lol
Sometimes all it takes is sunshine, a table outside, good food, and a few quiet moments to yourself.
And sometimes, that becomes a calming memory you carry home like I do.
